Prolifics’ Craig Breakspear on Low Code Modernization

When your IT department developers are modernizing old applications or creating a new application for you, they’re generally writing code from scratch or linking together pieces of already written complex code.

Low-code platforms take this to the next level – they are made up of reusable, connectable components that already have the complex code built in. Low code uses a flowchart or storyboard methodology with “drag-and-drop” components to create apps.

Low code can build and deliver portable, scalable, and resilient apps faster and cheaper than traditional development.

We discussed the use of low code in modernization with Craig Breakspear, Consulting Architect and Line-of-Business Lead in our Digital Experience practice.

What Is Low Code and Why It Matters

Low-code development allows teams to:

  • Build and deliver apps faster
  • Reduce manual coding and technical debt
  • Improve scalability, portability, and resilience
  • Lower costs without sacrificing quality

This approach supports modernization and digital transformation by empowering both IT and business users to innovate quickly.

Q&A: Understanding Low Code with Craig Breakspear

Q1: When you talk to a customer about modernizing, how does low code come up?

CB: The whole goal of low code is to take an existing, important, yet outdated application and say, “We need to get this to market quickly—how do we do that?”

Low code makes it possible to build applications faster and cheaper without degrading quality and to deploy across platforms—phone, tablet, or desktop—with ease.

Q2: What applications are the best candidates for low code?

CB: Think about your phone — you might have 20 to 50 apps, each doing one specific thing like banking, weather, or email.

Low-code applications follow the same principle. They’re:

  • Small, segmented apps rather than one monolithic system
  • Quicker to develop and deploy
  • Easier to manage security
  • More maintainable and scalable

Q3: Will a typical client looking to modernize have these app candidates?

CB: Absolutely — about 80% of applications can be modernized with low code.

Even large applications consist of smaller tasks. Instead of rebuilding the entire system, we can modernize specific modules—three or four menu items at a time—using a low-code environment for faster results.

Q4: Can a client use low code by themselves? Why do they need Prolifics?

CB: Low-code platforms are often marketed to business users, but a basic understanding of app development, workflow, and security is still essential.

That’s where Prolifics adds value.
