With more than 25 distribution centers, it ships products around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our original MDSC article involved outdated systems being handled expertly by older, but retiring, employees. MDSC could not attract younger workers for the old systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prolifics helped solve that immediate issue by implementing LegaSuite \u2013 a tool that acted as a bridge between a MDSC\u2019s existing applications and a user-friendly, web-based interface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was this initial work that impressed MDSC and secured for Prolifics the integration projects of this <a class=\"wp-block-heading\">Challenge \u2013 getting systems to talk to each other<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While LegaSuite solved an immediate, pressing issue for specific systems, MDSC still had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Systems like SAP<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Various websites and databases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A number of different Windows applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These systems didn\u2019t necessarily speak to one another \u2013 they needed integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MDSC was doing a lot of integration already, but these efforts usually involved passing files or reading and writing directly from databases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This type of integration is known as point-to-point integration, where individual pieces of data flow from system to system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For every business use case where data needs to flow from one system to another, someone would have to handwrite code that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Extracts that specific data from one system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pushes it into another system<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeats this for every single integration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This could reach hundreds or even thousands of point-to-point integrations \u2013 all of which would have to be maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company wanted a more modern approach to their integration platform so data would be more readily available, and their business would be more flexible, dynamic, and faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What we did \u2013 the modern world of APIs<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The modern approach uses application programming interfaces (APIs).<br>The API-led approach has each system create its own interface that offers its data for any other system to access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MDSC chose MuleSoft to provide the integration software (middleware) for building APIs to connect systems, applications, data, devices, and other platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many clients choose MuleSoft because it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cloud-based and centralized<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All-inclusive and scalable<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quick and easy to start with<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>They can run it as software as a service (SaaS) or even integration platform as a service (PaaS) \u2013 simply paying a monthly fee while MuleSoft manages the infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our implementation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Prolifics first brought in architects to discuss our integration expertise and MuleSoft capabilities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We then built a series of APIs to integrate two core systems \u2013 SAP and JD Edwards \u2013 with other systems, along with other MuleSoft implementations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A testing team built a number of automated test cases to test the new APIs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The automated testing was left in place so MDSC could rerun test scripts whenever they made changes or added new APIs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Result<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We started MDSC on their API-integration journey, making MuleSoft the standard within their company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The automated testing saves MDSC considerable time and money over their previous manual testing provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, data is more readily available, and MDSC\u2019s business is more flexible, dynamic, and faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example: Faster order processing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Field reps taking orders no longer have to send them via email or for batch processing.<br>Now, the reps\u2019 order-taking application automatically calls an API that places the order into the sales system immediately \u2013 wirelessly from the laptop in the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This enables real-time visibility:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reps can tell clients exact inventory availability and shipping times<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instead of saying, <em>\u201cI\u2019ve put in your order and I\u2019ll let you know what\u2019s going to happen.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>By
