Why move to SAP S/4HANA?

It’s a complex but flexible approach. In contrast, a Brownfield migration brings existing functionality from the current SAP ERP system to S/4HANA, preserving processes and configurations. It’s a quicker implementation, but with limited process redesign.

Integrating Renewable Energy into E&U’s Main Grid

Our client

Our client is an energy and utility (E&U) company that provides natural gas and electricity to millions of customers in its state. The company is improving their energy infrastructure for safety and reliability by investing in clean energy and advanced grid technologies. They are also aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by mid-century.  

Challenge

Our client implements remote grids (also referred to as “smart grids and “microgrids”) in sparsely populated areas where perhaps 10 or 15 houses are clustered together. In these cases, it’s not feasible to set up a transformer and poles, especially since these areas are prone to wildfires. These remote grids are smaller, and often use renewable sources, like solar panels.  

However, when these remote grids were first installed, they were stand-alone and not integrated into our client’s main grid. Our task was to set the connections up so that the client would have the ability to integrate solar and wind energy from remote grids into their main distribution management system, as well as incorporate local area data into their hazardous awareness warning center to detect potential wildfires.  

Action

We built APIs for integration using our client’s selected API platform. We provided our client with ample resources such as a Customer Success Lead, a Delivery Partner, and an API platform advisor to ensure the success of the project. We utilized our highly regarded offshore team of developers and testers, who offered expert tech skills efficiently and cost effectively.  

Result

The client was extremely pleased with the remote grid project results, which will allow them to integrate the renewable energy into their main distribution management system, as well as readily access data on potential wildfires.    

Next steps

Because of the success of the remote grid project, the client asked Prolifics to lead several all-day workshops to help outline their five-year enterprise integration plan strategy. From this, we will help our client with their integration of their distributed energy resource management systems (DERMS) into their advanced distribution management system (ADMS). We are also undertaking our client’s customer outage journey, or the integration of processes and information to ensure a top customer experience in the notification of planned outages. And, because of our API platform expertise, the client is considering a platform managed services arrangement, which will free up their people for higher level projects.

The Experience POWER Conference – You Talked, We Listened

Prolifics’ energy and utility (E&U) experts sponsored a booth at last week’s Experience POWER conference in Savannah, Georgia. On hand to meet E&U industry representatives from around the country were Prolifics’ Konrad Konarski – VP, AI & Emerging Technologies, Michael Braun – Account Executive, Swati Dora – Associate Director – Client Success, and Jeanette Wareham – Account Executive. We had many interesting conversations and discussions, and here’s a summary recap:

What we heard and learned

  • How to generate green energy was one of the predominant questions of the conference – using green hydrogen or other environmentally–friendly sources and moving away from coal/fossil fuel. A tangent of this was the pressure electric vehicles (EVs) will put on the current electrical grid – and how companies are planning to tackle this question. Prolifics’ solution in these areas – which we discussed with many of the attendees – comes from our Emerging Technology practice. Artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and the use of digital twins (an exact digital copy of an existing system to run scenarios without recourse) can all be used to with issues like the capacity of a particular generating plant given specific conditions, or the efficiency of a new design of turbine. Our Emerging Technologies can be used in many ways to generate real answers, quicker and cheaper, than anything previously done.
  • A top concern we heard from E&U operations people is how they work and interact with their IT departments. Often, they feel the business is now driven by technology mandates and IT projects, but the operations people are rarely asked what they need or what they think should happen. At Prolifics, we understand both E&U technology and the E&U business. We know that IT departments are being asked to do more with less, while large tech projects are needed to keep the organization customer-focused and cost efficient. As an IT services provider, we ensure that operations people are a partner brought in to discuss the what, how and why of any E&U technology project.
  • Another major problem that came up in our discussions was regulatory compliance. Prolifics has dealt with regulatory compliance issues across multiple industries – E&U, finance, healthcare – and it often comes down to data governance issues like quality and lineage; lack of integration such as data siloes; and inefficient processes like manual entry. Our Data & AI Governance services provide data quality, accuracy, and availability to help meet compliance goals and objectives, while our Integration Modernization offering addresses the way different systems communicate with each other, to give a company agility and flexibility.
  • In addition to integration for regulatory purposes discussed above, many start-ups came to us asking about workforce and system integrations. Integration Modernization is one of Prolifics’ earliest practice areas – we have more than 30 years of experience. Our offering encompasses full lifecycle systems integration implementation, modernization and management services, including digital transformation, API implementation and management, microservices design and development, and more.
  • Microgrids (or remote grids) were a big topic at the conference, which led to discussions on connected equipment and the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) – the deep integration of information, communication, and the real economy. Prolifics IoT expertise is also part of our Emerging Technologies practice, in which we match and combine the latest cutting-edge technologies that are not readily available or used by others for efficiency, safety and cost savings.
  • Many organizations approached us about creating custom-built applications for them for very specific purposes. This is where Prolifics expertise in low-code platforms comes in. Low-code platforms are made up of reusable, connectable components that already have complex code built in. Low code uses a flowchart or storyboard methodology with “drag-and-drop” components to create apps. Low code can build and deliver portable, scalable, and resilient apps faster and cheaper than traditional development.
  • Cybersecurity is on everyone’s mind, with the visibility and importance of E&U companies making them a higher target. Prolifics Identity and Access Management offering moves organizations away from fragmented solutions and helps them evolve into a full, digital-identity-ready business. It controls how individuals are assigned roles and levels of system access; how those individuals enter and move within a system; and how identity and access information is added, edited, and deleted.

Integration – yesterday and today

Once upon a time – a long time ago – a company first deployed more than one system, and the concept of integrating those systems was born. Thus, for many of us, integration is not new, and in the spectrum of IT projects and technology, it’s not necessarily exciting.

“Not so fast”– says Andy Blank, Prolifics VP, Offering Management and an integration modernization subject matter expert (SME). Andy’s seeing a huge – and exciting – new focus on cloud adoption related to digital transformation, with a lot of companies putting up a lot of investment.

“The first thing to understand is the large shift that’s happened in the last couple of years and is continuing to happen – there is a huge amount of growth in integration,” said Andy. “It was originally attributed to the need for integration for new business models during the pandemic, but even now, with the pandemic in the rear-view mirror, this growth has continued throughout all industries. Companies are doing it – and they’re doing it in a big way.”

Andy notes that we’re in the middle of a predicted $10 billion integration modernization growth period, 2021 to 2026. It’s fueled by growing demand for digital transformation, which is key for operational excellence, product leadership, and outstanding customer experiences.

“More and more systems have to talk to each other in more and more disparate places, in more and more disparate ways – and companies are adopting hybrid or multi-cloud infrastructures. Integration is in the middle of all of it,” said Andy.

When looking for a technology company to assist with your integration modernization projects, Andy recommends that your organization should consider the following:

  • Does it look like they’re just going to jump in headfirst, or do they offer discovery meetings or workshops to uncover your true issues and needs?
  • What’s their experience? Do they have a track record of client success stories and case studies?
  • Have they worked in your industry before, and do they know how integration affects the whole of your business?
  • Are they pushing just one technology or vendor, or have they worked with and supported a variety of offerings based on what’s best for the client?
  • Do they only do certain integration pieces, or will they support you from design to implementation for your whole project?
  • Will they disappear when the project is done? What support or managed services can they provide?

“For companies out there, I have a simple message,” said Andy. “What are you currently using for integration? Digital transformation is the key to competitiveness and success, and integration is key to digital transformation.”
