Software upgrade set to increase accessibility and reduce operating costs

 

Our Client

Our client is a non-profit credit union assisting more than 60,000 customers in 17 markets to 100 branches and offices. They have been a Prolifics client for more than a decade.

Challenge

With their number of registered accounts continuing to increase, it’s reasonable to think that the credit union is excelling. However, there’s an underlying issue at hand—our client has a lot of information to keep track of.

What’s more, they were using an outdated legacy system to do so. This put them behind their competitors, who were already utilizing the latest technologies and satisfying their business objectives as a result.

This posed our client with several challenges, including:

  • Slow performance and an inability to process transactions in a timely manner
  • The need to receive ongoing maintenance and upgrades, which required lots of time and money
  • Poor scalability, meaning that the capabilities of their legacy systems were incredibly limited
  • Fragmented data architectures, meaning that their data was stored in several different locations instead of a single, easily accessible one
  • Ineffective security controls, which jeopardized the safety of their customers and employees.

Our client trusted Prolifics as their approved vendor to recommend an approach for migrating to a more modernized system.

Action

The client approved our recommendation to migrate their existing Microsoft SQL server to Azure SQL Managed Instance, a Microsoft cloud platform. This migration will automatically transfer the client’s information from their previous database to the newer Azure platform with little to no negative impact on their data and give them access to all of Azure’s latest features.

What makes this migration especially significant is that it will be completed using the latest tools and technologies in the market, keeping our client ahead of their competitors. Our role will entail implementing all of the new features into the client’s upgraded platform and following them all the way through to production.

Results

The Microsoft Azure Migration will result in enhanced data access and significant cost savings, since it will eliminate the previous costs associated with managing their database from a physical data center.

The Client

Our client protects the integrity of financial markets by delivering world-class risk management, clearing and settlement services for options, futures, OTC and securities lending transactions. In its role as guarantor and central counterparty, our client ensures that the obligations of the contracts it clears are fulfilled. We have been working with them since 2017.

Challenge

We have been assisting with our client’s existing information server for more than three years. To ensure their organization’s continued success, they needed to set up the latest security systems and procedures. Implementing a new technology would require them to seek out and obtain approval from a security certification provider, which potentially could take a long time.

Sabahath Khan, Associate Software Architect for Prolifics, explains some additional challenges our client faced. “Right now, they have several broken applications in different environments and don’t have an effective way of managing them,” he said. “Consequently, patching or doing any kind of changes entails a lot of extra work. So, they wanted to move onto the cloud, automate all of their broken applications and then streamline their application deployments, installation processes, patching, and upgrade process all in one go.”

Since they had invested so much time and money into an in-house technology that was already built into their server, our client felt that modernizing the technology was the best route to take. Confident that we would be able to help them do so quickly and easily, they sought assistance from our modernization experts.

Action

After considering several options, we determined that the best way to meet our client’s needs was through a cloud native lift and shift. Greg Kordelski, Client Success Director for Prolifics, said, “You can bring it around to any part of their organization, plop it on any environment and simply hit a few buttons to deploy that whole environment. We’re not doing this anywhere else, so it’s definitely new and unique.”

Khan is currently migrating all of our client’s applications and data onto AWS. “They have a few different environments that we are moving on to the cloud, including the development, testing and production environment,” he said.

We are currently utilizing two forms of automation with our client, including Terraform and Ansible. While Terraform is responsible for provisioning and standing up our client’s servers in the cloud, Ansible deploys all of their existing applications. Now, instead of having all their applications in different environments, Khan said, “We are helping to arrange them in one area so our client can manage them in a more organized way.”

Results

By modernizing our client’s existing server, we are helping them maintain the security and processes programmed within it so they can easily migrate to the cloud. They are also able to process a significant amount of data and keep up with the progression of data governance as a result. Our modernization efforts have provided our client with features they didn’t have access to before, including increased capacity, backup, storage and a higher retention time. “Through automation, our client can bring up all of their applications with a simple click,” Khan said. “They simply have to go through and run the pipelines, which will then build the environment and immediately deploy whatever changes they want.”

Kordeslki explains that we have other opportunities underway with this client, including metadata and data quality projects, staffing and other proposals.

Khan is confident that more modernization work will follow. “This is only the first step in our modernization journey with them,” he said. “So I’m definitely expecting more work to come.”

Technology

Lift and shift:

Lift and shift is also known as rehosting. It is migrating an exact copy of an application, data or operating system from one environment to another, usually from on-prem to the cloud.

Terraform:

Terraform Cloud enables infrastructure automation for provisioning, compliance, and management of any cloud, datacenter, and service.

Ansible:

An open source, command-line IT automation software application written in Python. It can configure systems, deploy software, and orchestrate advanced workflows to support application deployment, system updates, and more.

Migrating Away from SAS – You Can Do It!

Statistical Analytics System (SAS) is software used for data analysis. It’s the most widely used data science platform across the globe, so if your organization uses it, you’re in good company. However, SAS is a legacy environment that many organizations find problematic. As with any mature legacy system with tentacles wending their way through an organization’s operating systems, a SAS environment requires a great deal of upkeep — to operate properly, it must be updated and upgraded frequently, which requires purchasing a lot of licenses, and that results in a high cost of ownership.  

How Do You Reduce Your Reliance on SAS? 

What executives often don’t realize is that there are not only many cloud platform options, but plenty of migration paths, all of which have their own benefits and levels of cost savings.

  

Why Do Organizations Migrate to the Cloud?

Most organizations cite seven main reasons behind their choice to migrate to the cloud. Read about those reasons here.

Different Migration Paths 
  • Replatform: This migration path requires very few changes to an organization’s existing legacy code. Instead, systems are simply redeployed to a new platform. Some businesses might choose this method as a proof of concept before undertaking a more complex migration method. It also could serve as a migration’s first phase, before shifting to a second.  
  • Refactor: In this migration path, a system’s general functionality is not altered, but legacy code is translated to the Python programming language, and technical debt, which is created when development decisions prioritize speed over design, is reduced. An organization may choose to stop at this point, or refactoring can be a step on the path toward total replacement.  
  • Replace: For a migration that implements a total platform replacement, legacy code is fundamentally rewritten in order to optimize and modernize an organization’s systems and allow them greater ability to innovate. This option requires decision-makers to take part in a Design Workshop, which helps them imagine the possibilities a modern platform would allow and choose the landscape that would best serve them.  

What is PAM?

Prolifics literally wrote the book on migrating from a legacy system to a modern cloud architecture environment. Our experts created a business-sensitive Prolifics Agile Migration (PAM) process manual. This manual provides definition, formality and rigor around the process, and provides a jumping off point to create a unique solution for your organization.

Regardless of the path you choose, however, two things are evident: thorough testing is imperative, and Python must be the programming language used to build the new platform. 

Why Does the World Love Python? 

Python is an agile, sophisticated and robust open-source programming language widely used for data science, and it is the most downloaded one in the world. Dr. G opines that it is above and beyond SAS in data science, and he believes that any organization considering a move to modern cloud architecture has to make Python part of the equation. “The reality is that Python is eroding legacy scripting languages, like SAS,” he said. “These legacy scripting languages evaporate because they’re islands — they are not a part of an integrated system.” 

Because it doesn’t require licenses and allows users to pick and choose only the pieces of code they need, Python offers the flexibility and cost savings that legacy scripting languages can’t.  

FUN FACT:  Legend says that when Guido van Rossum began to implement Python, he was reading scripts of the 1970s BBC television show “Monty Python’s Flying Circus,” which served as naming inspiration. Presumably, he thought “Python” was a better name than “Silly Walk.”

The Shape of Today’s Cloud – 7 Things You Need to Consider

As kids (okay, and as adults too), we’d gaze at the shapes of clouds in the sky and talk about what they looked like to us. Today, in a technology context, the shape of your cloud takes on a whole new, and much more important, meaning when you’re talking cloud migration.  

Whether you’re leaving your on-prem systems behind, or looking to jump from your current cloud set-up, you need to take a hard look at your prospective new cloud homes. Make sure you compare the qualities and benefits in each cloud provider, so you get the combination that’s right for your business goals – not all clouds are created equal.  

Here are seven things to think about when you’re gazing at the tech clouds and contemplating migration: 

1) Cost. As compared to on-premise, cloud saves you big money on hardware, maintenance and related infrastructure (like climate-controlled rooms). It also frees up IT staff to do more important work. Yet, among the big cloud service providers, things like optimized computing pricing; per second pricing; and available commitment discounts vary, as do data storage and movement costs. While these charges may seem similar on paper, you could save tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars based on choosing the right cloud platform for how your business runs. 

2) Scalability. Clouds are certainly scalable. But make sure you only pay for what you need; and know whether you have to purchase access or pay a scheduled fee to scale up or down. 

3) Availability and redundancy. What’s the cloud vendor’s uptime guarantee? A 99.95 percent guarantee still means about ½ a workday down in total over a year. But – do uptime guarantees come with any additional costs associated with redundancy? Does it cost you more to get to 99.99 percent?   

4) Security and Access. What’s the provider’s approach to security? Have there been any breaches? What enhanced measures are in place? On the flip side, can you access your data at any place (e.g., remotely), method (e.g., mobile) and time?  

5) Compliance. Similar to security, does your provider meet all needed provisions for government regulations, like privacy regulations or PII protections? Especially consider the compliance regulations or certifications most important to your industry and company. 

6) Compatibility. Again, not all clouds are created equal. There could be compatibility issues with operating systems, apps, image formats – issues you need to know about before you choose your provider, not in the middle of a migration. 

7) Lock-in. You may have felt locked-in with your aging on-prem systems or the cloud set-up you’re looking to leave. Don’t let it happen again. Does the provider have high fees for data transition or transfer? Is there a claw back of those original commitment discounts? Know your exit strategy so the next move isn’t a surprise mix of costs and difficulties.

About our Client

Challenge 

Bringing an idea to life – quickly

A psychiatry practice was looking for ways to effectively monitor patients with chronic pain and substance use disorders. They found that with traditional, in-person appointments there were gaps in information (partly due to the passage of time between meetings), and that patients were less forthcoming with their status when face-to-face with their doctor. What the practice found, however, was that patients responded more completely and accurately when using surveys, questionnaires and similar forms of communication with the psychiatrists. The practice validated their findings with research and nine peer-reviewed and published trials.

The practice felt they could capitalize on their findings and help other medical providers monitor their patient populations. They realized that a mobile app would be the perfect vehicle to bring the idea to life. They also knew they were not mobile app, programming or data experts, and that they would need to outsource to, and entirely rely on, a third-party technology company. Investors had taken a strong interest in the findings and the mobile app concept.

Mobile apps are a tricky, time-sensitive sell. Investors want more than an idea presented as mock-ups of “screen shots.” Investors need to know that a mobile app will actually incorporate the findings and ideas, actually function, and be able to scale. They’ll be happy to take their money elsewhere if a working app is taking too long to produce. The psychiatry practice, now housing the project as the start-up company “PainScript,” could not find a technology company with the ability to produce a viable app in the relatively short time frame the investors wanted – months instead of a year or more. However, they were then introduced to Prolifics.

Action 

The Prolifics feedback loop

The Prolifics Innovation Center applied intellectual properties and accelerators to the PainScript project that other technology companies haven’t developed. The Center created a constant feedback loop that became crucial to the app creation. Greg Hodgkinson, Chief Technology Officer and Worldwide Head of Engineering, explains:

“A critical factor for anything we build for a customer is their feedback cycles. This feedback loop occurs every week. We have this cycle where they give us feedback on what they want. We run sprints every two weeks and produce a prototype. Next, we are able to evaluate whether we’re on the right track. This is based on the customer’s own determination and their feedback. Then we build out the features to get us to a minimum viable product, or MVP. The feedback loop setup is what made the project successful.”

“We ensured what got built was 100 percent aligned with the customer’s needs. This is not just aligned with the customer’s needs at the beginning, because market conditions change. As they see the product being built, their view on what they need changes. Then we’re able to pivot using our agile methodology and change in line with changing expectations and needs.”

Azure – a focus on getting the job done

Using Azure has been key to the PainScript launch and its continued success:

  • The Azure cloud is where everything runs. The PainScript solution consists of microservices and database, all of which reside and operate in Azure.
  • In addition, the PainScript solution uses Azure services in the cloud, including:
    • Azure Red Hat Open Shift
    • Azure Database for MySQL Server
    • Azure API Management Service
    • Azure Storage Account
    • Azure Virtual Machines
    • Azure Monitor
  • Prolifics takes advantage of Azure DevOps to manage the work and then streamline and automate the build and deploy of the software

Azure’s features save the technical team from a lot of headaches, such as software installation, server set-up, backup policies and more. Azure’s tools and the emphasis on developers took away many basic worries and helped us focus on getting the job done. Its speed got us from an idea to “up and running” and generating value quickly.

Prolifics quickly built PainScript a working MVP that both the company and the investors were extremely pleased with – and the start-up got its investor money.
